Robotics Build Tool Gets Major Update: Faster, More Reliable Robot Software

⚡New Bazel-based system could make robot software faster and more reliable, but complexity may limit adoption.

Deep Dive

A new release of the ROS Central Registry (RCR), lyrical.2026-10-05.rcr.0, is now available at https://bazel.ros.org. The RCR is a community Bazel build for ROS from Lyrical onward, designed to complement colcon, pixi and other build tools rather than replace them — and it is still a proof of concept whose future depends on community adoption and involvement.

One commenter argues Bazel is very compelling for large teams with infrastructure support and a monorepo, but also immensely complex for smaller teams or academia, where existing tooling offers an easier on-ramp. Andrew Symington also intends to start a working group to coordinate developers and maintainers.

Key Points
  • Bazel is a build tool that makes software builds faster and more reliable by tracking dependencies and caching results.
  • The new RCR release is experimental and may not suit small teams due to Bazel's complexity.
  • Community involvement will decide whether this becomes a standard for robot software development.

Why It Matters

More reliable robot software means safer and more efficient robots in factories, homes, and hospitals.
