AI Memory Shortcut Matches the Fancy Method — but Only for Sorting

When an AI assistant remembers you, it usually does one of two things. It can search through everything you've done or said before, pulling out the most relevant bits every time it answers. That method is accurate, but it's slow and costs more as your history grows. Or it can compress your history into a short summary of you — like a mini profile — and use that instead. That's much cheaper, but until now most people assumed it made the AI less accurate.

This new research puts that assumption to the test. The team built a tool called PersonaLink that automatically turns a person's history into a simple profile with just three fields. Then it tests and refines that profile on the person's own past behavior until it stops improving. Importantly, they used the same AI model underneath both methods, so the only difference was how your history was presented — as a full search or a short profile.

The results surprised them. On a test where the AI had to sort news articles into 15 topic categories for 200 different users, the short profile was just as accurate as the full-history search method. That means for many everyday tasks — sorting emails into folders, tagging content, recommending a category — an AI can do the job just as well with a tiny memory of you, saving time and computing power.

But here's the catch. When the task changed to predicting numbers — like guessing a rating or score — the short profile fell short. So the memory shortcut works when you're picking a category, but not when you need a precise, continuous value. The finding is a reminder that AI personalization isn't one-size-fits-all, and that the cheapest trick doesn't always win. Still, for the growing number of apps that sort people into buckets, this could make personal AI assistants noticeably faster and less expensive.
