Researchers Design AI Tool to Fight Fraud for 124+ Million Bangladeshi E-Market Users
This new system could finally solve rampant fraud in informal online markets.
Researchers from the University of Illinois have designed 'Bonik Somiti,' a socio-technical AI tool to combat fraud in Bangladesh's massive informal e-markets. The system, based on a study of 124 survey participants and 36 interviews, provides structured reporting and admin-led mediation to resolve disputes. An evaluation with 32 users revealed its potential to build trust and accountability in a market where scattered social media warnings currently fail to protect buyers and sellers.
Why It Matters
It provides a scalable blueprint for using AI to build trust and safety in informal economies across the Global South.
