Bioinspired Kirigami Capsule Robot for Minimally Invasive Gastrointestinal Biopsy
A tiny, origami-inspired robot you swallow could revolutionize gut biopsies, making them painless and far safer.
Deep Dive
Researchers have developed a swallowable capsule robot that can collect tissue samples from the stomach and intestines. Inspired by kirigami paper art, its flat surface transforms into tiny, sharp flaps to gently scrape tissue, which is then stored inside. In tests on pig tissue, it collected samples comparable to standard forceps but with very shallow, controlled penetration. This bridges a major gap between passive imaging cameras and the need for actionable biopsies.
Why It Matters
This could make diagnosing serious gut diseases much less invasive, painful, and risky for patients.
