Apple, Samsung, Google Watches Now Flag Hypertension, Sleep Apnea, and Pulse Loss
Smartwatches can now detect hypertension, sleep apnea, and loss of pulse—beyond blood sugar.
Apple Watch Series 9 and later use 30-day pattern analysis for hypertension notifications. Samsung Galaxy Watch 4 and newer models look for signs associated with moderate-to-severe obstructive sleep apnea after at least two nights. On Pixel Watch 3 and 4, Loss of Pulse Detection responds when a pulse is no longer detected and the wearer does not react; the watch gives vibration and sound to cancel before attempting to call emergency services. Garmin can catch an irregular rhythm, and Huawei looks for diabetes risk. None of these features provides a diagnosis, but they can prompt timely medical checks.
- Apple Watch Series 9+ uses 30-day trend analysis for hypertension alerts; recommends cuff confirmation.
- Samsung Galaxy Watch 4+ detects sleep apnea after two nights of wear via Samsung Health Monitor.
- Google Pixel Watch 3/4's Loss of Pulse Detection can auto-call emergency services with location data.
