Beware of Scams - Scammed by Reddit User

A sophisticated online scam targeting the AI and local LLM community has resulted in a $9,500 loss, exposing critical vulnerabilities in peer-to-peer tech sales. The victim, a regular on the r/LocalLLM subreddit, responded to a comment from user u/antidot427 offering a Mac Studio for sale. Over 20 messages, the scammer built trust by providing a fake Apple receipt with a matching serial number, screenshots showing AppleCare coverage, and over 20 photos of the device. The scam was bolstered by a PayPal Goods & Services invoice that appeared to originate from a legitimate Ohio school board, complete with a functional website. The buyer, caught up in the excitement of acquiring high-end hardware for AI workloads, overlooked red flags like a fictitious name on the receipt and a recently registered email domain.

After payment, communication ceased within 48 hours, revealing the elaborate facade. The buyer discovered the school board website was registered only three weeks prior and the contact number belonged to an unaffiliated individual. The receipt itself contained a critical flaw: it indicated a Canadian purchase for a China (CHN) model Mac. The victim has since opened disputes with both PayPal and their Citi credit card, but faces a mandatory 7-day waiting period with PayPal before escalation. This case serves as a stark warning for tech professionals seeking deals in niche online communities, demonstrating that even experienced individuals can be targeted by highly detailed, patient social engineering attacks that exploit platform trust mechanisms like PayPal G&S.
