Brain Wave Test May Help Track ALS Progression
Could a simple, painless brain scan help doctors monitor ALS better?
ALS (amyotrophic lateral sclerosis) is a rare disease that damages the nerves controlling movement. People gradually lose the ability to walk, speak, and even breathe. Right now, doctors track ALS with physical exams, but those are subjective and slow. This study tested whether a simple brain wave test, called EEG, could give a more reliable measure of how the disease is progressing.
The researchers put caps with 128 sensors on people with ALS and healthy volunteers in the Netherlands and Ireland. They asked them to do a simple computer task while measuring brain activity. They focused on beta waves, which are linked to planning and controlling movement. Earlier work suggested these waves behave differently in ALS. This study tried to confirm that.
The results were mixed. In the Irish group, the earlier findings were repeated: people with ALS showed reduced beta wave changes compared to healthy controls. But in the Dutch group, no such difference appeared. However, in both countries, stronger beta wave rebound was linked to faster reaction times. That means the brain signal really does reflect movement ability.
This is important because a reliable, objective marker could help doctors monitor ALS progression more accurately. It could also make clinical trials faster and cheaper, since researchers could use brain signals to see if a drug is working, rather than waiting for physical decline. The inconsistency between the two groups is a warning though. The method needs more refinement before it can be used in the real world. But this study brings us closer to a tool that could help thousands of people living with ALS.
