China's AI Is Now Designing Chips 4 Times Faster
Faster chip design could mean cheaper phones, cars, and gadgets sooner.
China is betting big on AI to design its next generation of computer chips. Empyrean Technology, the country's biggest maker of chip-design software, says it now uses AI "agents" — programs that can carry out tasks on their own, like a helpful assistant — to handle the tricky work of laying out circuits inside a chip. The company's chairman, Liu Weiping, said one layout job that used to take four weeks now takes just one. That's a four-fold speed-up.
The shift matters because designing chips is famously slow, expensive, and detail-heavy. Engineers traditionally sat at computers, clicking through software tools step by step. Now, according to Liu, the job is becoming "humans commanding agents" instead of "humans operating tools." He called this a "paradigm shift" at a chip industry expo in Shenzhen this week. If AI can genuinely cut design time, new processors could reach the market faster and cost less to develop — which eventually shows up in the price of phones, laptops, cars, and smart appliances.
There's a political angle too. Beijing has spent years trying to build a self-sufficient semiconductor industry, partly because US export restrictions have limited China's access to advanced chip-making tools. Faster, AI-powered design software is a piece of that puzzle. Empyrean is also building a platform that lets its AI agents work alongside partners' agents, which could make the whole Chinese chip ecosystem move more quickly as one coordinated machine.
The catch: Empyrean is changing how it charges customers. Instead of the traditional one-time software licence, the company wants to bill based on "token consumption" — essentially, how much AI computing you use. That's the same model behind ChatGPT and other AI services. It could make costs less predictable for chipmakers, and it's unclear whether the four-week-to-one-week gain holds up on the most advanced chip designs. Still, the direction is clear: AI is moving from a novelty in chip design to the main event.
