AutoGPT's Free AI Now Comes With Pre-Built 'Experts' — And Your Files

AutoGPT, one of the most popular free AI projects on the internet, just shipped version 0.8.1. Instead of one general-purpose AI assistant that you have to train up yourself, this update adds a roster of ready-made "experts" — AI personalities pre-loaded with specific job skills and routines. There's Max for sales, Zara for marketing strategy, and roughly seventeen others covering general business tasks. Think of it like hiring a small team, except they're software you download for free.

The more useful shift is what these experts can now access: your files. The update adds nested folders, a folder picker, and a filter that lets an expert read documents in your own workspace. That means instead of copying and pasting text into a chat box, you can point the AI at a folder and let it work. The platform also added eight new AI models to choose from, including options from Anthropic, Google, Alibaba, Tencent and OpenAI, plus a connection to Zapier — the tool that lets apps trigger each other automatically.

The catch is real. This is still labeled a beta release, built by volunteers on GitHub, and the notes read like an engineering changelog rather than a polished product. Setup requires some patience. And once you hand an AI access to your folders, you're trusting software with your documents — the update does include security fixes that keep file access inside a sandbox, but that protection exists precisely because the risk does.

Still, the direction is clear. A year ago, AI agents were a demo you had to babysit. Now they come with job titles, skills, and the ability to dig through your actual work.
