Meet ARTiS, a Robot Hand That Grips Tools Like a Human
Robots often drop tools during disassembly, but this new gripper might fix that.
Anyone who has tried to unscrew a stuck bolt knows you need a firm, steady grip. Robots struggle with that too. Most robot hands are either too rigid or too soft: they either crush tools or let them slip. ARTiS, a new robotic gripper from researchers in Japan and Ukraine, was designed specifically to hold tools firmly while they are being used, even during tough disassembly work.
The trick is in the design. ARTiS has a soft palm that can tighten like a fist when it needs extra grip — a technique called active jamming, similar to how a beanbag chair stiffens under pressure. Its fingertips use fin-ray adaptation, meaning they bend and wrap around an object like flexible fish fins. This lets the hand adjust to oddly shaped tools. On top of that, the fingers have seven degrees of freedom, which is a technical way of saying they can move and rotate almost as flexibly as human fingers.
Why should you care? This gripper is aimed at the "undisassembly" problem: taking products apart for recycling, repair, or parts recovery. Today, much of that is done by hand because robots just aren't reliable enough. If ARTiS works as well in factories as it does in tests, robots could start dismantling old phones, laptops, and appliances more safely and at scale, meaning less electronic waste and more materials reused.
There are still limits. ARTiS was tested with conventional tools in a lab, not yet in messy real-world recycling centers. And having a human-like hand is not the same as having human judgment — someone still has to tell the robot what to do. But the combination of softness, strength, and dexterity points toward a future where robots can work beside people on hands-on jobs, taking the strain and danger out of manual labor.
