Apple readies AI home hub, updated Apple TV and HomePod mini

Apple is making a major push into the smart home market with three new devices built around an upgraded Siri AI assistant, according to Bloomberg's Mark Gurman. The centerpiece is a roughly 7-inch square smart home hub running a new tvOS-based operating system with iOS and watchOS design elements. It supports FaceTime, home security monitoring, intercom, photo viewing, music playback, and smart home controls. A key feature is facial recognition: the device identifies the viewer and adjusts the display accordingly. Two versions are planned: one with a half-dome base resembling a cut HomePod mini, and another that mounts magnetically to a wall. Alongside the hub, Apple is refreshing the Apple TV (keeping the same design) with a new N1 networking chip enabling Wi-Fi 7, Bluetooth 6, and Thread support, plus a faster processor for on-device AI. The HomePod mini update focuses on internal improvements, swapping its S5 chip for a newer processor capable of running Siri AI features. The Apple TV and HomePod mini are expected this fall, while the home hub arrives between October 2025 and early 2026.

This move puts Apple in direct competition with Amazon's Echo Show and Google's Nest Hub, as the smart home battle shifts from basic device control to AI-powered assistants capable of understanding context and completing complex tasks. Apple's advantage lies in deep integration across its ecosystem—iPhone, Apple Watch, and AirPods—allowing the hub to recognize family members and deliver personalized information, making its smart home offering more cohesive. However, Apple faces an uphill battle against Amazon and Google, which have spent years building their ecosystems and user bases. The timing is critical as consumers increasingly expect AI-driven, seamless home experiences. Apple's focus on privacy (on-device processing, camera limits) could also differentiate it from competitors like Meta's smart glasses. If successful, these devices could transform Apple's relatively small HomePod and Apple TV businesses into a meaningful smart home platform.
