Apple Calls New M5 MacBook Pro Its Most Powerful Laptop Yet
New MacBook Pro offers up to 4x faster AI performance, 128GB RAM, and starts at $2,199.
Apple has officially unveiled its next-generation M5 chip family, powering refreshed MacBook Pro and MacBook Air models. The flagship announcement is the new MacBook Pro, which Apple calls its most powerful pro laptop yet, featuring the debut of the M5 Pro and M5 Max chips. Built on a new "Fusion Architecture," these chips are designed for dramatic AI and graphics performance leaps, with the company claiming up to 4x faster AI performance over the previous generation and up to 8x faster AI image generation than M1 models. The refresh is a clear strategic push toward faster, smarter, and more future-ready Macs, with both lines shipping with macOS Tahoe and its enhanced Apple Intelligence features.
The technical upgrades are substantial. The MacBook Pro's 18-core CPU includes six "super cores" Apple calls the world's fastest, alongside 12 performance cores. It offers up to 50% better graphics performance than M4 Pro/Max, SSD speeds up to 14.5GB/s, memory bandwidth up to 614GB/s on the M5 Max, and configurations with up to 128GB of unified memory. Storage starts at 1TB for Pro and 2TB for Max models. Both the Pro and Air include the new N1 wireless chip for Wi-Fi 7 and Bluetooth 6. The MacBook Air, now starting with 512GB of storage (double the previous base), also gets the standard M5 chip with a 10-core CPU/GPU. Pricing starts at $2,199 for the 14-inch MacBook Pro with M5 Pro and $1,099 for the 13-inch MacBook Air.
- M5 Pro/Max chips offer up to 4x faster AI performance and 50% better graphics than M4, with up to 128GB unified memory.
- MacBook Air doubles base storage to 512GB and features the standard M5 chip with 10-core CPU/GPU for up to 9.5x faster AI than M1.
- Both lines include new N1 chip for Wi-Fi 7/Bluetooth 6 and ship with macOS Tahoe, emphasizing on-device AI with Neural Accelerators in each core.
