Researchers have developed AnyThermal, a universal AI backbone for thermal imaging. It learns robust features by distilling knowledge from powerful visual models into a thermal encoder, using a new diverse dataset called TartanRGBT. Unlike previous task-specific models, it works across indoor, aerial, off-road, and urban environments without retraining, achieving state-of-the-art results with improvements of up to 36% on tasks like place recognition and segmentation.
