Anthropic faces pressure for official Claude Desktop Linux build

A GitHub issue with 131,000 stars is pressuring Anthropic to release an official Claude Desktop build for Linux. The request consolidates prior discussions and points out that while Claude Code (the CLI) ships signed packages for apt, dnf, and apk on Linux, the full desktop GUI remains macOS- and Windows-only. This means Linux users lack access to Claude Desktop’s extensions, computer-use features, desktop dictation, and Cowork — capabilities that depend on the graphical interface. The issue argues that Anthropic’s infrastructure already supports Linux distributions, making the omission harder to justify.

The security angle is central: Linux users currently rely on third-party repackages (e.g., aaddrick/claude-desktop-debian) that handle OAuth tokens and API keys. While praised for quality (signed repos, CI-tested), these are not vendor-audited. Anthropic’s silence on Linux desktop plans forces developers to choose between no GUI or trusting unofficial builds. The issue also notes that Claude’s Cowork agent on macOS boots a Linux VM internally, proving the Linux execution path already exists inside the product. A published first-party build would resolve both the feature gap and the security concern.
