OpenAI's ex-COO Brad Lightcap departs after 8-year run

Brad Lightcap, OpenAI's special projects lead and former COO, is leaving the company after an eight-year stint. In an internal memo later posted to X, Lightcap told colleagues he'd been focused on "the next horizon" and was excited to "advance the mission from a different vantage point," confirming he'd be starting his own venture. He remains for a few more weeks to ease the transition. Lightcap's role had shifted significantly since March 2025, when his COO duties expanded to oversee global deployment, business strategy, and partnerships. By January 2026, he ceded product and engineering oversight of the enterprise push to Barret Zoph, who himself departed months later, but Lightcap retained commercial functions. In April, he officially stepped down as COO, moving into a special projects role reporting directly to CEO Sam Altman, with CRO Denise Dresser absorbing much of his former portfolio.

The departure adds to a wave of high-profile exits at OpenAI. AGI chief Fidji Simo left in July after medical leave, and CMO Kate Rouch stepped down in April for health reasons. President Greg Brockman has taken control of product, and the company has vowed to eliminate "side quests" in favor of key revenue drivers as it prepares for an IPO over the coming year. Lightcap's exit signals continued leadership instability at a critical juncture, but his stated focus on "new things the world will need to get right" suggests he sees opportunity beyond the AI lab.
