Lateral Workshop helps senior pros break into AI safety

Lateral Workshop is a new three-day program in Berkeley, running from September 11–13, designed specifically for mid-career and senior professionals who want to pivot into AI safety. The program targets people with deep experience in fields like running large organizations, policy connections in DC, or specialized technical domains like cybersecurity and verification. Organizers note that these professionals usually have the relevant skills, but struggle with the opaque nature of the AI safety field—how it works, where they can contribute, and how to become credible candidates.

The workshop tackles concrete barriers: difficulty signaling mission alignment, lack of professional networks, limited free time, financial risk from competitive hiring, and trouble evaluating a young field with few traditional career markers. It also acknowledges that organizations are hesitant to take bets on experienced outsiders, because leadership failures can be costly. The program aims to reduce this friction by creating a pipeline similar to those built for students, helping experienced professionals translate their existing competencies—especially tacit people-management knowledge—into AI safety impact. Applications close August 9th, and the event is positioned as a first step toward building a community and career path in a field that urgently needs senior talent.
