New AI Finds the Right Fetal Ultrasound Frame Faster and More Accurately

When you get a pregnancy ultrasound, the technician usually has to freeze the probe at just the right angle to capture a baby's belly in a perfect cross-section. That image is used to measure the baby's growth. But in many low-cost clinics, the ultrasound is done as a "blind sweep" — the probe is moved across the belly while recording video, and the technician has to hunt through the footage for the few good frames. That's where AnatoProto comes in. It's a new AI system that automatically picks out the right frames from those ultrasound videos. Second, it learns patterns from the whole video — not just single frames — so it gets better at ignoring false alarms.
The results are impressive. On a standard test set called ACOUSLIC-AI, AnatoProto scored 67.72 on the F1 scale, which balances catching the right frames with avoiding wrong ones. That's 13 points higher than the previous best AI for this task. It even beat models designed for general video analysis by 15.76 points. The researchers also discovered that one of their methods works only when combined with the other — a subtle finding that shows how carefully the system was designed.
