The Arctic is opening up. As sea ice shrinks, more ships can sail through northern waters each summer, cutting thousands of miles off trips between Asia and Europe. So a team of computer scientists built an AI route planner that thinks about all of it at once. Then it hands the captain a short menu of the best options rather than a single answer, showing the trade-offs: this route is two hours faster but cuts through a seal breeding area, that one burns more fuel but stays clear of a village's fishing grounds.

The unusual part is what the AI is told to care about. Most routing software optimises for time, fuel, and safety only. This one adds ecological criteria such as Essential Fish Habitat and seal critical habitat, plus the burden new traffic places on nearby communities. Crucially, the researchers kept the value judgements in human hands — the AI lays out choices, but people decide which trade-off is acceptable.

The catch: this is a research paper, not a shipping product. It has been published with open code and a project page, but there's no evidence yet that it has guided a real vessel through real ice. And no algorithm can fully capture what a community actually wants from its coastline — that still takes people in the room. Still, it points at where Arctic shipping is heading: more traffic, and more pressure to prove the traffic is worth the cost.
