Alibaba Cloud joins PyTorch Foundation as Platinum member

The PyTorch Foundation, under the Linux Foundation, announced that Alibaba Cloud has become a Platinum member. This move strengthens Alibaba Cloud’s longstanding commitment to PyTorch, which it has deployed at scale across heterogeneous hardware internally and for cloud customers. As a Platinum member, Alibaba Cloud gains a seat on the foundation’s governing board, represented by Vice President Junhua Wang. Principal Engineer Tao Ma also joins the Technical Advisory Council. The company plans to drive the PyTorch ecosystem by delivering seamless hardware experiences and contributing engineering expertise in AI compiler optimization, multi-chip support, and large-scale stability practices. Alibaba Cloud’s own PyTorch distribution, used for workloads ranging from LLM training to autonomous driving and recommendation systems, will feed improvements back upstream.

Alibaba Cloud is the developer of the popular Qwen family of open-weight LLMs and multimodal AI models, which have gained strong community adoption since 2023. By joining the foundation, Alibaba Cloud aims to advance the AI lifecycle from training and optimization to production-grade inference. The company’s infrastructure underpins key projects like SGLang, vLLM, and PAI-TurboX, serving large-scale enterprise customers. The PyTorch Foundation Executive Director Mark Collier welcomed Alibaba Cloud, noting its recent launch of AI accelerators for the agentic era. This membership underscores the growing influence of Chinese cloud providers in open-source AI infrastructure.
