Factories increasingly run on 'digital twins' — virtual replicas of machines and production lines that let engineers test changes, spot faults, and predict breakdowns without touching the real equipment. Building one, though, is painful. Someone has to hand-write code linking the virtual copy to the actual machine's manuals, sensors, and software. It typically takes weeks of specialist work, and every time a production line is reconfigured for a new product, much of that work starts over.

A research team from New Zealand and Europe says AI agents (software that can plan and take actions on its own) can do that job instead. Their system runs two paths at once. One reads messy documents — spec sheets, manuals, spreadsheets — and pulls out the technical facts, using RAG (letting AI look things up in your own documents rather than guessing). The other path finds the machine's live data feeds and plugs into them automatically, using something called Model Context Protocol, essentially a universal connector for AI to talk to industrial equipment.

In tests on a robotic machining cell, the setup hit 97.2% accuracy at perceiving what was going on, and the deployment cycle fell from several weeks to an average of two hours. That is the difference between a project you schedule a quarter around and something you do in an afternoon.

Why it matters beyond the factory floor: reconfigurable manufacturing is about switching a line to make a different product quickly. If retooling the software takes hours instead of weeks, small factories can take on smaller, more varied orders profitably, and downtime shrinks. It also shifts the skill mix — less time writing custom code, more time checking that the AI's automated setup is actually right. The honest caveat is that this is one experiment in one robotic cell, published as a paper rather than a shipped product, so widespread factory adoption is still years out.
