Adobe’s Project Indigo camera app, originally launched to deliver a natural SLR-like photography experience on iPhone, is taking a sharp turn toward generative AI. The version 1.1 update introduces an AI Playground suite with four sections: Styles (AI-filter presets for illustration or lighting effects), Object Editing (remove people or objects with generative fill), Photo Guidance (AI suggests reshoot edits), and Custom Edit (free-form prompts to tweak images). Unlike Adobe's usual reliance on Firefly, this experiment uses Google's Nano Banana AI model, which runs on-device and already includes SynthID watermarking.
Adobe fellow Marc Levoy emphasizes the feature is an experiment: a small percentage of users get free access with no sign-in, and results may vary with each button press. If popular, a paid version will follow. Notably, this update lacks Adobe's usual C2PA Content Credentials for AI transparency, though the team plans to add them. For now, Indigo remains a tool for camera nerds—but with new generative capabilities that blur the line between photography and AI creation.
