This Plant-Based Glue Could Finally Make Recycling Work

That label on your soup can or shampoo bottle is held on with petroleum-based glue. And that glue is a huge reason so many labeled containers don't actually get recycled. As Patty Ferreira, CEO of Silvis Materials, explains, even if you toss a label-covered container into the recycling bin, the glue can contaminate the whole batch and send it to a landfill.

Silvis Materials has developed an adhesive made from plant cellulose — the same stuff that gives trees and plants their structure. It bonds as well as traditional glues, but unlike petroleum-based versions, it fully biodegrades during the recycling process. That means labeled containers can be recycled cleanly, without special sorting or extra steps.

The company started in 2014 by tweaking how cellulose acts as a stabilizer in glue formulas. Now the adhesive can be made from virtually any plant source, from wood pulp to agricultural waste. Silvis is working with packaging and construction companies through MIT's startup program to test the glue in real products. Ferreira says the switch could cut production emissions by up to 80% and use half the energy of fossil-fuel glues.

The catch? This is still early-stage. The adhesive needs to be adopted by big manufacturers and pass long-term durability tests. But if it works at scale, it could be a simple, low-cost fix for a stubborn recycling problem — no new bins or sorting machines required.
