A team of researchers has built a virtual assistant named ATHENA for the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE). It's designed to help engineers find and use the huge amount of technical knowledge needed to plan oil and gas wells. Instead of digging through reports and databases by hand, engineers can ask ATHENA questions and get answers with sources they can check.
The team first tested ATHENA with 75 real petroleum professionals. Compared to a standard AI search tool (a type of AI that looks up information), engineers using ATHENA completed realistic well-planning tasks much faster and with more consistent quality. But the first version had weaknesses, so the researchers improved it. They made it better at pulling information from many documents at once, added ways to validate answers, and made it proactively share useful knowledge with engineers.
A second round of tests showed the upgraded ATHENA beats the state-of-the-art baseline again. It has now been integrated into the SPE Research Portal and is being rolled out to the society's entire membership. That means thousands of engineers around the world could soon have this AI as a colleague.
The catch is that ATHENA isn't a replacement for human expertise. It still needs a human to double-check important decisions, especially in a field where mistakes can be costly and dangerous. But as a tool to cut down the grunt work, it's a concrete example of AI quietly making highly technical jobs easier.
