Chip Breakthrough Paves Way for Ultra-Fast Terahertz Wireless
Future phones could get a massive speed boost from this tiny chip.
CMOS chips hit a wall at terahertz (THz) frequencies — charge transit time and parasitic capacitances limit their top speed, and smaller transistors handle less current. This study investigates plasma waves in the electron channels of CMOS transistors as a route to THz signal amplification. The researchers explored plasma wave amplification in a continuum transistor array made from 28 nm FD-SOI CMOS transistors, using a hydrodynamic transport model combined with Pierce's theory. Simulations of gated amplifiers suggest THz signal amplification is possible in advanced fabrication nodes, and a proof-of-concept amplifier operating at 700 GHz was designed, fabricated, and shown to amplify signals along the plasma wave propagation
