A new academic paper from researchers at the Hellenic Open University (HOU) suggests that Viber, the popular messaging app, plays a significant role in enhancing communication and community in higher distance education. The study, titled "A Qualitative Comparative Study of Communication in Higher Distance Education," was submitted to arXiv on June 23, 2026, by authors Vasileios Mellos, Petros Trantas, Kleanthi Santamouri, Christos Douvlos, Alexandros Gazis, and Theodoros Vavouras.
Building on a previous conference case study at HOU, the research applies connectivism learning theory, along with concepts of social presence and community-based learning, to analyze how Viber chat complements formal online learning. The findings indicate that Viber acts not merely as a simple messaging tool but as a casual space where students exchange knowledge, offer help, and gradually develop a sense of belonging. This aligns with broader research showing that social media can reduce feelings of isolation among distance learners.
