Scientists Just Mapped Every Mobile Signal on Earth — Past, Present and Future

A new 1km map shows who has phone signal, who doesn't, and why it matters.

Where you can get a phone signal quietly decides a lot about your life. It shapes whether you can work remotely, take an online class, receive money by phone, reach a doctor, or get warned about a flood. But until now, nobody had a single, reliable, worldwide record of where mobile coverage actually exists. Phone companies publish their own maps, but each one is different, incomplete, and rarely comparable across borders. So a team of researchers built one themselves — and they made it huge.

The new dataset covers 214 countries and territories in one-kilometer squares, from 1999 to 2030. For each square, it estimates the chance you'd get 2G, 3G or 4G signal that year. Think of it like a weather map, but instead of rain it shows signal. To build it, the team used three independent methods: one that learns patterns from existing data, one that simulates how phone companies economically decide where to build towers, and one that reads satellite-style maps of roads, power lines and cities. Then they blended the three into a single best guess, with an honest error range attached to each square.

The models were trained on 2,409 real coverage maps reported by mobile operators, which run up to 2020. That means the years 2021 to 2024 are educated predictions based on things like population and infrastructure, and 2025 to 2030 are straight extrapolations — forecasts, not facts. The researchers report their model was roughly 89 to 92 percent accurate on countries it had never seen before, which is strong for this kind of global guesswork.

So what is it actually for? Aid groups can spot villages with no signal before sending teams. Governments and lenders can see where a new tower would help most. Researchers can link connectivity to income, schooling and health survey results. The whole dataset is free to download, which means the map of who is connected — and who is being left behind — is finally public.
