Annie Yuan's new theory redefines expertise as dynamic workflow cognition
Expertise isn't static knowledge—it's a continuous coupling of thought and action, says new framework.
A new theoretical framework from researcher Annie Yuan challenges long-held views of expertise as a static accumulation of knowledge or skill. In a paper titled 'A Dynamic Coupling Theory of Expertise Through Thinking Flow and Workflow Evolution' (arXiv:2606.24197), Yuan proposes 'Workflow Cognition' as the underlying cognitive architecture that continuously generates expertise. The framework defines two recursive components: Thinking Flow (ongoing perception, interpretation, judgment, decision-making, and reflection) and Workflow Evolution (continuous adaptation of actions, task structures, and operational strategies within situated practice). Expertise is not the knowledge or skill itself, but an emergent manifestation of this coupling over longitudinal professional experience.
Drawing on examples from craft, creative production, education, and leadership, Yuan introduces a Dynamic Coupling Model that reinterprets expertise as a process rather than a trait. Knowledge, skills, decisions, and aesthetic preferences become observable expressions of expertise, not expertise itself. The paper lays groundwork for future research on Longitudinal Tacit Cognition, Longitudinal Aesthetic Cognition, and Expertise Workflow Grammar. Crucially, this cognitive ontology could enable computational representations of human expertise within AI+Expert systems, potentially allowing AI to model and augment expert decision-making in complex, evolving domains.
- Proposes 'Workflow Cognition' as a recursive coupling of Thinking Flow (perception, judgment) and Workflow Evolution (action adaptation)
- Redefines expertise as an emergent process over longitudinal experience, not static knowledge or skills
- Establishes foundations for computational expertise modeling in AI+Expert systems, with applications in craft, education, and leadership
Why It Matters
