‘A dream come true’: helpers flock to Disneyland for free trip given as thanks

5,000 domestic workers from six countries received a rare day of magic at Hong Kong Disneyland.

Deep Dive

In a significant community initiative, the Li Ka Shing Foundation and Hong Kong Disneyland Resort provided 5,000 complimentary tickets to the city's migrant domestic workers. The tickets were distributed for two select days, drawing hundreds of workers from the Philippines, Indonesia, India, Sri Lanka, Nepal, and Thailand. Crowds gathered eagerly before opening, with many dressing up in Disney-themed attire to celebrate the rare opportunity for leisure and celebration away from their demanding caregiving roles.

For many attendees, this was their first visit to the park despite years of living in Hong Kong. Indonesian helper Novita Herdiana, a fan since childhood, dressed as Maleficent and expressed that the day was "a dream come true" after nine years in the city. The initiative served as a powerful token of appreciation for a workforce integral to Hong Kong's households, offering a full day of rides, parades, and fireworks—a memorable respite from their daily routines.
