Hong Kong Flat Fire Forces 58 to Evacuate, Woman Hospitalized

Around 10.59am on Tuesday, police received multiple reports of a fire in a flat at 488 Hennessy Road in Causeway Bay, a busy shopping and business district in Hong Kong. The fire quickly prompted a large-scale evacuation. In total, 58 people were brought out of the building safely. That included 42 residents — 25 women and 17 men — plus another 16 people who had been inside a bank on the ground floor. Fire crews responded and managed the situation, though the cause of the fire has not yet been announced.

The oldest evacuee was a 98-year-old woman who said she felt unwell during the ordeal. She was taken to Ruttonjee Hospital in Wan Chai as a precaution. No other injuries were reported, which is good news given how quickly fires can spread in crowded urban buildings. The evacuation went smoothly, but moments like this remind us how important working smoke alarms and clear exit routes are in apartment blocks and commercial spaces.

The disruption extended beyond the building itself. The Transport Department closed all lanes on a section of Percival Street between Hennessy Road and Russell Street for a time, causing heavy traffic in the area. Tram services on the Happy Valley loop were suspended, and bus routes 108 and 117 were diverted. Motorists were advised to avoid the area and use alternative routes, creating ripple effects for commuters during the late morning rush.

While this incident ended without serious injuries, it highlights how a single emergency in a dense city can shake up daily life for hundreds of people. It also serves as a practical reminder for everyone: know your building's evacuation plan, keep fire exits clear, and take any fire alarm seriously. The quick response by firefighters and police likely prevented a much worse outcome.
