Google's Pixel 11 Magic Capture uses Gemini AI to auto-shoot your best moments

Google has announced the Pixel 11 series, and its camera chief Isaac Reynolds is doubling down on AI-powered photography. The flagship feature is Magic Capture, a new mode beside the Photo/Video tab that records a two-minute video while you hold or prop the phone toward your subject. Google's Gemini AI models then analyze more than 500 frames to identify 'peak' occurrences—the decisive moments—and save them as full-quality photos, complete with light cropping and composition edits. During a live demo, the feature captured surprisingly well-composed shots of dancers without the user ever tapping the shutter. It's a more polished evolution of Google's 2018 Clips camera, designed to let people experience events firsthand rather than through a viewfinder.

Beyond Magic Capture, the Pixel 11 Pro pushes digital zoom to 120X—up from 100X on the Pixel 10 Pro—combining machine-learning frame stitching with AI-generated pixels to fill in detail. Reynolds notes that features like 30X Super Res Zoom on the Pixel 7 Pro dramatically increased real-world zoom usage, and he hopes the new capability will spark interest in wildlife photography. The camera app also includes Instant Night Sight for low-light shooting. With Gemini handling the photography, Google is positioning the Pixel 11 as a tool that helps casual photographers break through their creative ceiling—while letting them stay present in the moment.
