Hong Kong security guard gets 4 months jail for dumping cat in bin

Hong Kong's Kwun Tong Court sentenced former security guard Chou Wing-lok to four months' imprisonment on Thursday for one count of cruelty to animals. The case stems from an incident on the night of August 6, 2025, at Lee Kee Building in Ngau Tau Kok. A ninth-floor resident reported a stray cat entering their flat. Chou, the attending guard, captured the cat, placed it in a plastic bag, tied it shut, and dumped the bag into a ground-floor rubbish bin.

The cat's owner discovered his pet was missing the next day, believing it had slipped out when relatives took out the trash. After reviewing neighbor's security footage, the owner saw Chou leaving another flat with the plastic bag. The magistrate condemned Chou's actions, stating they "literally sent the cat to the landfill," implying the animal likely died there. The sentence includes time served, but no additional compensation order was mentioned.
