Gmail's 1.8B users can now disable AI email scanning in 30 seconds
Google's Gemini AI reads your tax docs and chats — here's how to stop it.
Google's latest Gmail updates have quietly enabled Gemini AI to scan all user emails for smart features like contextual replies, email summaries, and personalized drafting. The AI analyzes content including tax documents, financial information, and private conversations. Shark Tank's Lori Greiner posted a viral Instagram warning, claiming Google doesn't want users to know about this scanning. The features are enabled by default — users can disable them in Gmail settings (gear icon > See all settings > Smart features and personalization) in about 30 seconds. However, turning them off means losing future AI upgrades and the ability to toggle back on.
On May 7, Google announced two new personalization enhancements: topic contextualization that automatically pulls relevant information from Gmail and Google Drive into email drafts, and tone/style personalization where the AI mimics how the user speaks based on past emails. These features are available to Google AI Plus, Pro, and Ultra subscribers, as well as Workspace accounts. The updates follow a class-action lawsuit earlier this year over Google enabling smart features without user consent. Google claims the features are optional and users remain in control, but privacy advocates urge everyone to check their settings immediately.
- Gemini AI scans all Gmail content by default, including tax docs, financial data, and personal conversations
- Disabling takes 30 seconds via Settings > Smart features and personalization — but you lose all new AI upgrades permanently
- New features include topic contextualization (auto-pulling Drive data) and tone mimicry for email drafts
